Intel this week showed a new roadmap for Gaudi that reveals a name that hadn’t appeared yet: Jaguar Shores. This is the codename for a future generation of the AI accelerator, arriving after its closest new generation, currently known as Falcon Shores.

According to VideoCardz, Intel has plans to mass distribute the Gaudi 3 next year, after the Gaudi 2 had a more limited production run. As we know, Intel has been seeking to restructure several divisions and objectives within the company, in order to reverse the downward economic scenario that the company has been facing for a long time.

The Gaudi line of AI accelerators features products in ASIC format, but there are signs that this could change. Intel would have plans to bundle these products with GPUs for data centers, all under the same name for the entire family. So, if this goes ahead, Jaguar Shores may not be an ASIC, but rather a GPU, still with the Gaudi name.

It is interesting to remember that Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger even mentioned a “Falcon Shores 2” last year. Thus, Jaguar Shores could not come immediately after the first version of Falcon Shores, but there is also the possibility that Jaguar is precisely the official name of “Falcon Shores 2” – Gelsinger could have used the term before the generation had an official codename.

Will Jaguar Shores help restructure Intel accelerators?

We still need to wait and see what the “Gaudi family” of products will look like, if Intel actually goes ahead with the plan to add more lines to the name. However, it is already possible to observe that the company’s accelerator segment has undergone restructuring in order to compete.

Ponte Vecchio-based GPUs have already been discontinued and their Rialto Bridge-based successors were canceled last year. This way, the company will move directly to Falcon and Jaguar Shores.

It is also interesting to remember that Ponte Vecchio GPUs are present in the Aurora supercomputer, which is currently in third place on the Top500 list of the most powerful in the world.
