Blood in the water attracts sharks, say biologists and business opportunists who like metaphors. In other words, the problems with Intel’s 13th and 14th generation processors could result in a class-action lawsuit against the company.
Intel has been working to fix issues with its Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh-based CPUs while also fulfilling RMA requests from its customers. As such, a US law firm called Abington Cole + Ellery is seeking clients to file a class action lawsuit against the Core maker.
The firm has opened a website that can now be found on the r/Intel subreddit. On the page, the lawyers ask whether the person has a 13th or 14th generation Intel processor and whether they have experienced any issues with it, and also ask for contact information. Interestingly, at this stage of the form, there are no questions about Intel’s customer service regarding the possible issue.
Know more:
At the time of writing, the comment with the most upvotes asks whether Intel is not fulfilling the RMA on the affected CPUs. It points out that the manufacturer has committed to doing so, saying that lawsuits against companies that are honoring their warranties “are rightly thrown out of court with ridiculous speed.”
Another challenge for Intel?
Whether the class action lawsuit goes forward will depend on Intel’s ability to honor RMAs for affected CPUs. The company recently confirmed that any CPU above 65W could experience issues, which would result in a large number of customers needing replacements. If a significant number of people are left without compensation, the law firm will have its chance to seek compensation.
It is worth noting that class action lawsuits like this usually result in compensation for all people impacted by the company’s practices. In other words, not only those directly involved in the lawsuit will be compensated, if applicable.
Meanwhile, Intel will deliver new microcode this month to motherboard makers for BIOS updates that could mitigate issues found in Raptor Lake processors.
