Intel confirmed that it no longer intends to sell its NEX division, focused on networks and communications. The company had announced at the end of July this year that it intended to make the segment independent, as another way to raise funds and try to contain the drops that its finances have been constantly suffering in recent times.
This week, however, Intel reversed its decision, as stated to Reuters. “Keeping NEX in-house enables closer integration between silicon, software and systems, strengthening our customer offerings across AI, data centers and the edge,” the company told the news site.

Intel’s NEX division is responsible for its Ethernet and Wi-Fi controllers, as well as solutions for edge computing. The components are found in both home systems and professional solutions, and the company often bundles its controllers with its CPUs for OEM PCs or Xeon-equipped systems.
Investments in Intel may have saved the NEX division
Apparently, billion-dollar investments that Intel recently managed to achieve were enough to re-evaluate the need to sell the NEX division. Or perhaps the company did not receive offers that pleased it during the period and decided to give up.
Throughout the year, the company guaranteed that it will receive total funding of US$8.9 billion from the US government, with US$5.7 billion having already come after Intel’s shares came under State control.

NVIDIA also made an investment of US$5 billion in an unprecedented partnership with the owner of Core to focus on creating CPUs for AI of the future.

Now we need to wait for details to find out if this change of direction in plans for NEX will also mean a new strategy for the division. In the fourth quarter of last year, NEX made US$1.6 billion in sales, with an operating profit of US$300 million. Then Intel stopped reporting its financials independently, moving the figures to its customer and data center divisions.
