Intel would have given up on continuing research and development (R&D) inmates with glass substrates for their chips. The plan now would be to sign partnerships with third parties when creating components using the material. The information is not yet official, so it should be treated as a rumor.

The rumor comes from an @jukanlosreve post, a well -known hardware world insider. He also adds that the decision resulted in cuts of Intel employees working in the area, and that other specialized glass substrates are already looking for these people.

Techpowerup people estimate that the decision aligns with the position of Lip-BO Tan, current CEO of Intel. Replacing Pat Gelsinger, the new boss seeks to focus on areas where the company is already better consolidated, such as the development of CPUs and GPUS and the manufacture of chips.

Intel seeks to “wipe” its sectors and contain expenses to face its last falls. The idea is to maintain its focus on process 18 and in the future 14A as it resorts to partnerships so as not to be left out of the future possibilities of glass substrates.

J&TC may be among Intel’s partners for glass substrates

Rumors about Intel appear at the same time as the South Korean company J&TC releases new investments to offer components on glass substrates.

The Chips & Wafers staff comments that the timing is no coincidence. Their analysis is that J&TC must be one of the customers that Intel will seek for glass substrates now that it would possibly have given up on developing internally.

An official announcement should have a positive impact on South Korea’s actions, which can prove to be an important country for the first generations of glass chips.
