Introduced by Intel in 2021 alongside Alder Lake CPUs, the RS1 cooler has been officially discontinued by the manufacturer. The aluminum model was known for its extremely basic characteristics, having been created with the aim of replacing the standard model previously used by the company.
Weighing 260 grams and featuring a relatively small fan, the device was sold as a solution for cooling 65-watt chips. During its brief history, it only matched the Pentium Gold G7400 and Celeron G6900 CPUS, which had a TDP of just 46 watts.
While the RS1 Laminar model will be discontinued, Intel will continue producing other models similar to it. The cooler will be replaced by the RM1 version, already available on the market, which has similar features, but comes with a copper piece for better heat dissipation and features an LED lighting system.
RS1 successor is used by several CPUs
Intel’s decision to end production of the RS1 Laminar makes a lot of sense, especially given how limited it was used. Its successor, the RM1, in addition to having a practically identical design, is already adopted by the company in several CPUs from the 12th, 13th and 14th generation Core line.
It is also used in more discreet models, such as the Pentium G7400 and the Intel Processor 300, which already gave clear signs that the older version was no longer treated as a priority. While the individual cost of the more robust model may be higher, the fact that it is used in more models may make it more worthwhile for the company given the scale at which it is used.
Intel is one of the main companies present at CES 2025, an event that officially starts next Tuesday (7). Still this Monday (6), the company will make a major presentation focused on its future products, promising a “new era” of devices that use artificial intelligence as their differentiator.
