As Intel prepares for the launch of its Xeon 6900P Granite Rapids and 6900E Sierra Forest processors in the LGA 7529 socket, it is already working on the next generation. This is revealed by a listing on the company’s official Design-in Tools website, talking about LGA 9324 for Diamond Rapids.

The LGA 7529 is coming this quarter and is already quite large, but the LGA 9324 impresses with almost 10,000 gold contact points. At the time of this post, the page for the new socket has already been taken down, but not before a screenshot was taken:

The site reveals that Intel’s new socket for Diamond Rapids is part of a new platform, Oak Stream. It will likely be the successor to Birch Stream, which currently supports the LGA 4710 and, very soon, the LGA 7529. We don’t know any more details about Oak Stream yet, but apparently the LGA 9324 will support up to 16 DRAM channels.

WCCFTech points out that rumors were already circulating pointing to the possibility of Intel using the LGA 7529 in its future generation of Xeon CPUs as well. This “leak” on an official company website, then, was certainly timely to debunk the rumors.

Intel struggles to stay competitive

The giant Intel once led by far every CPU segment in which it operates, mainly home PCs and HPC. However, the company now sees its leadership constantly threatened not only by AMD, but also by other players trying to diversify the segments.

More news:

Interestingly, Amazon’s Graviton4 chip has emerged showing performance far superior to current Xeon components. Furthermore, AMD has already shown itself prepared to compete with Granite Rapids-AP-based Xeons with its Zen 5 generation Epyc also reaching 128 cores.

Finally, both Intel and AMD must prepare to face Nvidia, which is taking advantage of its absurd AI revenues to now also target CPUs for HPC.
