Tom Petersen, Intel Fellow and best known as the face behind Arc Graphics, joined The Full Nerd Podcast to discuss the Arc Battlemage announcement. During the program, he confirmed that the Xe3 is ready and they are already working on the 4th generation

The program is extensive but highly informative for those interested in learning about Intel’s accomplishments and ongoing projects. With the recent retirement of its CEO, the company also needs to respond to investors about its financial future.

Petersen, however, avoided sharing specific details, but did not rule out the possibility of launching an even faster Xe2 graphics card in the future. Intel is currently focused on the Arc B-Series launch, scheduled for December 13th.

Ongoing GPU Development

The Intel Fellow made it clear that Intel will not abandon Arc Graphics. In fact, the company is already working on Xe3 and its successor. He mentioned that Xe3 is already finished and currently being developed by the software teams, while the hardware team is focused on the next generation.

Our IP which is kind of called Xe3, which comes after Xe2, is practically ready. So software teams have a lot of work to do on Xe3. The hardware teams are moving on to the next one. This is our cadence, which we need to continue.

Future

Numerous engineers will still be involved in updating software and resolving hardware bugs if they arise when the Xe3 GPUs leave the factory. However, the key takeaway is that Intel is not slowing down. And that’s good for her and for investors.

The announcement of the ARC B580 and B570 graphics cards, faster than the RTX 4060 and costing less, is also a sign of the company’s effort to keep pace. In August, the mega-company had one close to that of OpenAI, the startup responsible for ChatGPT, but still a startup.

Petersen mentioned that GPU launches are at a rate of more than a year, so if the Xe2 is launching this month, we probably won’t see the Xe3 until 2026.

Even before launching the first Xe discrete GPU, Intel confirmed that the Xe2’s successor, the Xe3 architecture codenamed “Celestial”, will compete in the ‘Ultra Enthusiast’ segment. Meanwhile, the Battlemage has not yet reached the “Enthusiast” level.
