Just today (3) Intel officially announced its update to XeSS upscaling technology with the XeSS 2also launching the divisions of Intel XeSS Frame Generation e Low Latency Xe (or XeLL). With the new features, the technology is on par with competitors AMD and NVIDIA with DLSS and FSR.
Just like NVIDIA, Intel GPU users will be able to use both the Super Resolution with Frage Generation, together with XeLL to reduce the latency generated by the additional frames.
In addition to potential quality improvements from traditional XeSS upscaling, which was already very competent and often surpasses FSR, the main highlight goes to the new frame generation.
XeSS Frame Generation technology (as well as DLSS and FSR) uses data from previous frames, motion vectors, and depth information to generate intermediate frames, increasing performance without compromising visual quality.
In testing with the F1 24 game running at 1440p, Intel reported a 48 fps boost for an impressive 186 fps in the highest performance mode, equivalent to a 3.9 times improvement according to the graphs shared by the company.
O XeLL (Low Latency) is designed to reduce latency, directly competing with the Reflex from NVIDIA. With XeLL, Intel promises to reduce latency in games that run at less than 50 fps, from 57 ms to 32 ms, even with Frame Generation activated.
Frame generation functionality is currently only confirmed for series GPUs. Battlemage e Alchemist. There is no information about support for other lines of GPUs or manufacturers, which may limit adoption of the technology in the short term.
Rivalry with NVIDIA and AMD
Intel’s new GPUs come with XMX coresAI accelerators comparable to NVIDIA’s Tensor Cores, which offer advantages over AMD’s GPUs, which rely on hand-coded upscaling techniques.
On paper, the feature set of Battlemage rivals NVIDIA technologies while overcoming the limitations of AMD’s non-AI-based GPUs. We can still look forward to hands-on comparisons and side-by-side tests in the future.
