Intel has been going through a real turmoil in recent weeks, with instability issues in its Raptor Lake CPUs, a loss in Q2 2024, mass layoffs of its employees and a drop in the stock market. With its shares in free fall, it now has a market value similar to that of companies like OpenAI.

It is worth remembering that, although OpenAI is widely known for having created ChatGPT and software such as Sora, it is still a startup. In February 2024, its market valuation was closed at $80 billion. Today (8), Intel is worth $81.19 billion – a value that is too close, considering the entire history of the mega corporation.

It is important to mention that we are not belittling OpenAI and its achievements, with the sole intention of showing how much the “blue team” is losing strength in such a short time. With factories all over the world, being responsible for the most used CPUs in the world and having several divisions (including semiconductors), this would have been unthinkable a few months ago.

Intel recently released its second-quarter financial report, revealing that the company had not achieved the metrics expected by shareholders and management. CEO Pat Gelsinger said this was due to the company’s failure to capitalize on trends in artificial intelligence.

Intel’s move

To preserve profits, Intel also organized a mass layoff that sent 15,000 employees into unemployment – a total of 13.6% of its workforce. In 2023, the company had already made a similar move, following the trend of other global technology companies.

Furthermore, 13th and 14th Generation Intel CPUs continue to have oxidation problems caused by excessive voltage – leading to instability and chip degradation. Even with a ready action plan, which includes an update to prevent cases and extend the CPU warranty from 3 to 5 years, their image is not the best.

Considering Intel is launching its Core Ultra 200V processors in September and AMD is already established with its Ryzen AI 300 processors – as well as the Ryzen 9000 desktop CPUs that will arrive soon – the situation becomes even more complex. And that’s without even mentioning the Snapdragon X Elite processors that are in Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs.

A possible way out

Although Intel is in decline and its market value has reached a point close to what we see in companies like OpenAI, it seems that not all is “lost”.

NVIDIA is in talks to hire its packaging services for its AI-focused GPUs – H100 – considering that TSMC is not able to meet the demand. Rumors suggest that other tech giants will also seek Intel’s CoWoS-S solutions, which could favor them and help them overcome the adversities.
