Igor’s Lab, known for its extensive household consumer hardware tests, is reporting the discovery of a hotspot problem that affects the entire RTX 50 line. According to the site, the RTX 5060 IT are specially affected by the situation, which involves excessive heat accumulation in the area of the energy distribution system.
To give a sense of the problem, the site showed some of the most serious examples with a thermal camera. The Palit GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming Pro OC appears with a 80.5 ° C hotspot in the troubled region. Ironically, the GPU even remains in much more comfortable 70.3ºC.

The PNY GeForce RTX 5070 OC presented an even more impressive case, reaching 107.3ºC in Hotspot, in the same power distribution area. The GPU, in turn, appears with 69.7ºC.

The problem of excessive temperatures is component degradation, which can greatly compromise the longevity of the RTX 50 series video cards. According to Tom’s hardware, it is estimated that it is close to 80ºC that high temperatures begin to cause “advanced age” effects on electronics, which puts the examples mentioned and others at risk.

Proximity of the components would be the cause of the hotspot problem in RTX 50
Igor’s LAB staff explains that the components involved in the power distribution system for RTX 50 are very close, resulting in excessive heat accumulation. Fits, springs and drivers would need more room to better dissipate the heat generated by its performance.

There are possible solutions, however. The test authors themselves were able to considerably improve the hotspot temperature with a simple mod, applying highly conductive heat pladies between the plate and the backplate. The RTX 5080 would have fallen from 80.5ºC to 70.3ºC, while the RTX 5070 was 107.3ºC to 95ºC – which is still a very high, but certainly more manageable temperature.
