Long before Nvidia, AMD and Intel fought for the dominance of the GPUS market, 3DFX gained fame with its then revolutionary Voodoo line. Among the latest models launched by her was Voodoo4, which was Modified by a fan to fit inside a laptop – and run software using Windows XP.

Using Dell Precision M4800 as a base, creator Daniel S. (or Omores) has managed to create a custom machine using the old model as a starting point. He explained that his original idea was to use Windows 98 as an operating system, but this was not possible thanks to the way he works with integrated GPUS.

The Voodoo4 model used has a VSA-100 nucleus and 64 MB of SDR memory, Emulating the characteristics of the Plate Voodoo4 4800which was never released. While the model was virtually ready to reach the market, the process of bankruptcy and dissolution of 3DFX eventually stopped this from happening.

Voodoo4 adaptation process was not easy

Youtuber explained that the process of adapting GPU to Dell Precision M4800 was not simple at all. Windows 98 was discarded because its BIOS only recognized Laptop’s Integrated Intel GPU as a viable option, and the device itself did not allow the use of hardware because it was not part of its permissions list.

He tried to solve these problems by opting for generic VBS (Veses Bios) drivers. Although they allow the use of the old component, they eventually ruled out almost all hardware acceleration that could be supplied. In addition, Daniel noted that none of the solutions available were ideal, because they all bring some kind of disadvantage.

When Windows XP was used as a base, the installation and use of Voodoo4 proved much easier, even allowing the use of 3dmark 2001 benchmark and the execution of the Need for Speed game: Porsche Umleashed. While the GPU has not been best for games thanks to API limitations, the project should certainly stimulate other creators to experiment similar to it.
