Huawei officially revealed HarmonyOS NEXT, its own operating system that aims to definitively replace Android. Created by the company itself, the system promises artificial intelligence advanced and robust security.

One of the reasons why Huawei committed to developing its own operating system was the sanctions imposed by the United States. With the ban on doing business with North American companies, Huawei had to do some juggling to continue using Android on its devices. Hence the company felt the need to create its own system.

HarmonyOS NEXT details

During the Huawei Developer Conference 2024it was highlighted that HarmonyOS NEXT is an integrated ecosystem for smartphones, tablets, smart watches and vehicles.

The platform, independent of Android and Linux, improves performance by 30% and reduces energy consumption by 20%, compared to traditional architectures. Its kernel, called Hongmeng, and software are based on OpenHarmony.

Huawei also reported that the 5,000 most popular apps in China have already been adapted to the new system, which focuses on interoperability. This allows content to be shared easily between devices, without reinstallations or complex processes.

HarmonyOS NEXT also arrives offering support for technology Ark Multimedia Engine, Ark Graphics Engine e FTRTensuring that third-party apps run smoothly on Huawei devices.

Emphasizing the importance of artificial intelligence, Huawei introduced Harmony Intelligence, its suite of AI tools competing with Galaxy AI from Samsung it’s at Apple Intelligence.

Among its features are image generation, coloring and photo enlargement, and highlighting the AI Sound Repair, which helps people with speech disorders. Virtual assistant Xiaoyi can also describe images to users.

Developers in China can now access the Beta version, while the general public awaits the launch in August. HarmonyOS NEXT will hit the market in the fourth quarter of 2024 with Huawei Mate 70 cell phones, and a global version is confirmed, although no specific date has been announced.
