iPhones are known, among other things, for having great quality cameras, both for photos and videos. And, in fact, filming with an iPhone is quite enjoyable, especially when we put it in Cinema mode. I’m always impressed by how it’s possible to capture cinematic shots with a “simple” cell phone camera.

However, director Danny Boyle — whose films include “127 Hours” and “Slumdog Millionaire” — took smartphone filming to a whole new level. He shot an entire film using his iPhone 15 Pro Max. And I’m not talking about an experimental film, I’m talking about a blockbuster.

28 Days Laterwhich in Brazil was translated as “Extermination 3”, is an upcoming British post-apocalyptic horror film. It was filmed over the summer using the ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro Max as the main camera, along with additional equipment such as aluminum cages and lens attachments.

The filmmakers behind 28 Years Later apparently received technical assistance directly from Apple. The film is a sequel to “28 Days Later” (2002) and “28 Weeks Later” (2007), which portray the aftermath of a zombie-style pandemic in the United Kingdom.

The original film, 28 Days Later, was shot in standard definition 480p on a Canon XL-1 – a consumer-grade camcorder that recorded data to MiniDV tapes. This was partly due to the need to film complex scenes depicting an abandoned central London under very tight time constraints, where traditional, bulky film cameras would have taken too long to set up.

The unique digital filming aesthetic later became an iconic part of the film, so the use of iPhones to film the latest addition to the series appears to pay homage to the use of camcorders in the original film. The original film’s Oscar-winning cinematographer, Anthony Dod Mantle, is also returning alongside Boyle.

Several smaller-scale films have been shot on iPhones, including Sean Baker’s “Tangerine” (2015) and Steven Soderbergh’s “Unsane” (2018), but those films were limited releases and low-budget compared to Boyle’s upcoming film. “28 Years Later” is expected to be the first in a new trilogy of films scripted by Alex Garland. The original film’s breakout star, Cillian Murphy, is also expected to return. “28 Years Later” is currently scheduled for release in 2025.
