HDDs are better for the environment than SSDs, says Seagate

With more and more companies by adopting artificial intelligence technologies, it is also increasing the demand for data centers and storage solutions. Aware that this also results in an increase in energy consumption and environmental impacts, Seagate did a research that concluded that HDDs are better than SSDs to protect the environment in which we live.

The company compared the amount of carbon emissions generated by HDDs, SSDs and linear tapes, coming to the conclusion that the second option is the most polluting. Secondly were the ribbons that, despite being considered a very old solution, are also known for their reliability and long duration.

Seagate research makes sense when taking into account the quantities of power and energy that are demanded by artificial intelligence. Studies say that increasing demand for storage centers can increase the amount of electricity consumed by up to 165% through the world of technology until the year 2030.

Seagate has proposals to decrease emissions

Although it has concluded that HDDs are the least polluting solution, Seagate does not propose to exchange other technologies for this as an alternative to decrease emissions. The company believes that a true solution is advanced in liquid cooling systems.

In addition, it proposes that air heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems must be improved to ensure more efficiency. The company also proposes that everyone who is part of the cycle of creation, maintenance and use of databases must commit to extend the life cycle of the devices used and responding for the great emissions caused by them.

To top it off, Seagate is committed to continuing to use HDDs as a storage solution, as well as conducting studies and improvements that will make them even more efficient. Recently, the company has announced the new Mozaic 3+ line, which uses HAMR technology to deliver up to 36 tb of storage space.
