HDDs, which have been predicted to retire so many times, are in such high demand that prices have started to rise rapidly. At the end of last year, spikes in values ​​were already seen, and now we have an estimate of an average increase of 46% in prices in the last four months alone.
The high demand for memories that has inflated component prices mainly targets NAND and DRAM chips. This directly affects SSDs, which have become so expensive that more people and companies are turning to HDDs as an alternative, increasing their prices as well.
The table above was organized by ComputerBase, and shows that one of the increases reaches an incredible 66%, in the case of a 22TB Toshiba model for companies. Seagate’s 16TB IronWolf Pro had the smallest increase in the observed period, at 23%. The average among all models listed is a 46% increase, and the research was carried out in Europe.
HDDs begin to be directly affected by demand for AI
TechPowerUp explains that it is not just the scarcity and high prices of SSDs that has caused the demand for HDDs to increase, impacting their prices. The AI ​​race has also resulted in the creation of more hyperscalers and cloud service providers who prefer the classic style of storage.
Hard drives are still more viable alternatives for very high capacities – such as the 22TB Toshiba that has risen the most in price – in addition to being considered more reliable for long-term storage.
