Site that has become an international reference for its reviews and news about hardware and technologies in general, AnandTech is closing its activities this Friday (30). According to editor-in-chief Ryan Smith, the decision was made as a consequence of the transformations that the written journalism market has been undergoing.
“For better or worse, we have reached the end of a long journey — one that began with a review of an AMD processor, and ended with a review of an AMD processor.”, Smith wrote. He has been at the helm of the publication for the past decade, witnessing many transformations that the world of hardware has undergone.
As the editor-in-chief recalls, AnandTech was already on the air at a time when the term GPU was not even used as something common. “We’ve gone from boxy desktop computers to the laptops we now charitably call portable desktops, to pocket computers where even the cheapest device puts the fastest PC of 1997 in your pocket.”.
AnanTech will stay online, but will not receive new updates
Smith said that while AnandTech will no longer receive updates and its staff will need to look for new jobs, the site and its vast content will remain online. He said publisher Future PLC — which owns brands such as PC Gamer, Tom’s Guide, Marie Claire and Country Life — will keep the servers online indefinitely.
The discussion forums linked to the vehicle will also remain accessible, including all histories dating back to 1999.”So even though AnandTech won’t be publishing new articles, we’ll still have a place for everyone to talk about the latest technologies — and we’ll have those discussions for more than 48 hours.”, said the editor-in-chief.

In his farewell message, Smith also thanked the teams that have worked with the site over its 27 years of existence, as well as founder Anand Lal Shimpi, who left the site in 2014. He also expressed gratitude to the brands that supported the outlet and said that, despite the situation, will continue to fight for an internet that does not depend on sensationalism, clickbait and superficial news to prove commercially viable.
