Journalist Jason Schreier, known for his reports on the games industry, published an article this Monday (9) in Bloomberg addressing the apprehension of game publishers regarding the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Schreier states that the potential impact of Rockstar Games’ next big title is so significant that many companies are avoiding releasing their games in windows close to the long-awaited game.
Changes to the tone of the game
Among the details revealed, Schreier points out that Rockstar is making important changes to the tone and content of GTA VI. The company would have instructed its writers to avoid offensive jokes aimed at transgender people and other minorities, something that was common in previous games in the franchise.
“Grand Theft Auto VI will have two playable protagonists, a man and a woman, inspired by the criminal duo Bonnie and Clyde,” Schreier wrote in the article for Bloomberg News. “Additionally, Rockstar is asking its writers to be less offensive toward transgender people and other minorities, who were frequent targets of jokes in previous titles.”

The decision appears to be a reflection of Rockstar’s changes in stance, which, in 2022, had already removed content considered transphobic from Grand Theft Auto V during the relaunch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X.
