GPUS from the Radeon RX 9000 series supports only UEFI systems

AMD has confirmed on its official website that the Radeon RX 9000 video cards series supports only UEFI systems for full compatibility. This does not necessarily mean that CSM/Legacy systems will no longer work, but indicates that AMD is not responsible for possible support problems in its new GPUs.

As explained by Tom’s hardware, the use of the BIOS Colloquial term covers all firmware used by motherboards to make the boot of your system. This includes the most modern UEFI version (UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), which is actually another type, but is often called BIOS as well.

To maintain compatibility with older hardware, UEFI systems often offer a compatibility support module (CSM), which also appears as a “Legacy mode” on some systems. The new boards in the Radeon RX 9000 series no longer have official compatibility with these modes.

UEFI offers modern features as an interface to the user and supports drives greater than 2.2TB. One of its main features is Secure Boot, a requirement for installing Windows 11, for example.

Decision applies to the next GPUS after the Radeon RX 9000 also

Unsurprisingly, AMD’s decision is valid for plates “from the RDNA 4” generation, which means that the company’s GPUS will also offer official support only to UEFI.

“Firmware UEFI offers critical functions for your PC: Start and turn on the processor, detect and train memory, configure the data and peripherals of the motherboard, monitor and control central hardware, change low level settings and help Windows communicate with your PC components,” AMD explains in its post.
