The HBM3E generation of high performance memories seems to be close to getting lost to Samsung. Last week’s unofficial reports point out that while unable to validate its components with Nvidia, the South Korean company has lost another important customer, Google.

The information comes from Digitimes, and should be treated as rumors. The publication would have gotten information through communication between Google and MediaTek. It turns out that the search giant develops AI accelerators, which she calls TPUS.

The company recently introduced Ironwood, the latest generation of its accelerators. Thus, its next chip is already under development, in partnership with MediaTek, and Google would have informed changes in the supply chain to order HBM3E from Micron instead of Samsung.

Samsung has long been looking for Nvidia for its HBM3E memories, and now this difficulty seems to begin to affect the credibility of its components with its other customers as well. Meanwhile, Micron and Sk Hynix are always ready to take advantage of the opportunities and take more contracts from their rival.

To make matters worse from Samsung, increasingly aggressive sanctions between US and China may have “killed” the company’s chances of ends up some HBM3E orders with Nvidia.

Nvidia would have expressed interest in using memories on its H20 chips, which are less powerful versions of its professional AI accelerators so that they could be exported to China. Now even these components were banned, ending what could have been Samsung’s last chance with Nvidia – unless some surprising advance is won in their HBM3E in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, more established technologies like HBM2 and HBM2E, where Samsung has dominated the market, now face competition from Chinese companies. The segment of high performance memories seems increasingly difficult for the South Korea giant.
