Google Play services are an important part of the functioning of devices that run Android, as they can control various features and processes in the background.

But, for this, many end up consuming the internet. And to make managing this data easier, Google announced a new feature that allows users to see how much of this data each service is using on their devices.

Google services data usage monitoring

The new feature is present in a recent update to Google Play Services, or Google Play services. Now, it provides a more detailed look at the data usage of each of the services within Android.

To access this information, simply go to the app’s information page (looking for “Google Play Services” in Android Settings), then navigate to “Mobile data usage” and tap “Application settings”.

The new page shows a clear view of how much Google Play services are using in terms of mobile data and Wi-Fi. The functionality separates the data used by different services within the app, which helps even more with control and brings greater transparency to the user.

An interesting detail is that monitoring started in mid-September, and data usage is divided between mobile and Wi-Fi connections, so you can control them differently.

The main services that use data include:

  • Device Connections: Used to connect your smartphone to other devices, such as cars, smart watches, or Chromebooks.
  • System management: Updates system services and improves overall device performance.
  • System diagnostics: Collects data about device performance to improve user experience.
  • Security: Encompassing functions of password encryption, blocking spam calls and locating lost devices.
  • Portfolio: Manages payments made on the device, including contactless payments via NFC.

Other monitored services

In addition to system functionalities, the new tool also shows the use of data in more specific services, such as:

  • Contact synchronization: Used to keep your contacts updated on all devices signed in to your Google Account.
  • Ad Security: Control your ad preferences and prevent ad spam.
  • Fitness: Syncs data from fitness and activity tracking apps.
  • Autofill with Google: Automatically fills in information such as passwords and payment methods in applications.

Facilities for the user

With the new functionality, users can now more accurately monitor how much Google Play services are impacting data consumption on their devices, which can be useful especially for those using limited data plans.

Furthermore, this detailed view also helps you understand how different services use data and allows you to adjust settings if necessary to save money.
