Google is considering investing $23 billion to buy Wiz, a cloud cybersecurity startup that has major partners including Amazon and Oracle.

The news, released by The Wall Street Journal, highlights that this acquisition would be the largest ever made by Google, almost double the amount paid for Motorola Mobility in 2012.

Wiz promises innovation in cloud security

New York-based Wiz is known for offering targeted security tools and scanners for the enterprise market. The company stands out for its innovative approach to securing enterprise cloud infrastructure by creating a normalization layer between different cloud environments.

This enables companies to quickly identify and eliminate critical risks, an increasingly urgent need in an ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape.

Google’s potential purchase of Wiz appears to be a strategy aimed at strengthening its position in the cloud market, especially at a time when Microsoft, one of its main competitors, is facing several high-profile security breaches.

Thomas Kurian, head of Google Cloud, is said to be the main driver behind this acquisition attempt, according to The New York Times.

Google has been investing in security, but it needs to go through regulation

This wouldn’t be Google’s first foray into cloud security. In 2022, the company bought another cloud security startup for half a billion dollars, and in the same year, it acquired Mandiant for $5.4 billion.

Mandiant is best known for uncovering the SolarWinds hack, one of the most serious cybersecurity incidents in recent years. These acquisitions show that Google is working hard to cement its reputation as a secure cloud platform.

While the Wiz deal looks promising, it is not without its challenges. There is a possibility that the acquisition could face scrutiny from U.S. regulators. The Biden administration has taken a tough stance on antitrust issues, with the Justice Department suing Google over its research deal with Apple and the Federal Trade Commission trying, albeit unsuccessfully, to block Microsoft’s purchase of Activision.
