David Jaffecreator of the franchise God of Waronce again attracted attention with controversial comments on his YouTube channel. In his most recent video, the former developer held platform influencers responsible for the below-expected performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Jaffe claims that several YouTubers created a wave of hate around the game, encouraging negative reviews even without having played it. He classified these attitudes as opportunistic and accused content creators of prioritizing bad intentions to attract audiences.
“The industry is getting worse because of players”
In the video, Jaffe commented that many players have the idea of improving the industry by boycotting certain games. However, according to him, the community is contributing to the opposite effect, worsening the quality of the games:
“All the gaming community did was make games worse, which is something they said they weren’t trying to do. All because they have charismatic opportunists who make videos that, for some reason, people listen to. People who haven’t played the game hate it just because they were told to hate it.”
EA won’t innovate under pressure, says Jaffe
For Jaffe, boycotts and mass criticism only force companies like EA to standardize their titles, instead of creating more innovative games. He highlighted that, rather than responding with something bold like Stellar BladeEA will probably look for safe formulas to avoid new friction with the public.
Despite recognizing that Dragon Age: The Veilguard not worthy of competing for awards like Game of the Year, Jaffe defended the title as solid and fun.
“Do you really look at this game and say it looks like shit? Okay, that’s your opinion. But it’s fun, it’s a solid game. I understand the argument that people don’t have time to spend on a game that’s just fun, I respect that. But if it’s not your favorite game, just don’t play it, but it’s not a bad game.”
Focus on what you like, not what you hate.”
Jaffe also criticized the toxic behavior of some of the gaming community, suggesting that time spent criticizing games could be better spent celebrating those that please. He reinforced that EA should have prepared for the type of negative reaction the game faced, considering the current industry scenario.
Although controversial, Jaffe raises a relevant debate about the influence of content creators in the games market and the impact of toxic feedback on innovation and the development experience.
