A report of yet-to-be-announced Z890 motherboards from Gigabyte has been revealed in a Gear Seekers video. Although this is not the complete list, the highlight goes to TACHYON ICE CAMM2. “Tachyon” indicates a board aimed at overclocking, while “Ice” refers to a white edition, but another specification caught our attention, the supported memories.
CAMM2 (Compression Attached Memory Module) is a new type of memory that differs from the traditional UDIMM (Unbuffered Dual In-line Memory) module and the newer CUDIMM (Clocked Unbuffered Dual In-line Memory Module) used on desktop motherboards. . Unlike memory modules that are snap-on, CAMM2 is secured with screws, as demonstrated on some MSI prototype boards, making its removal and replacement less convenient.
About the CAMM2 Standard
The CAMM2 standard originated at Dell and was established as a universal standard by JEDEC, the semiconductor technical regularization board. With the constant evolution of DDR5 specifications, featuring various types of memory for desktop, mobile and server, establishing CAMM2 as a standard is an excellent initiative. However, like many new trends, this type of memory appears to be aimed at enthusiasts, at least in its first generation.
SO-DIMM (Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module) memory modules have been in use for 27 years and their performance is at the technological limit. The introduction of CAMM2 should expand the potential of memory modules. They are 57% thinner, improving heat dissipation and reducing the distance to the CPU by 50%, which decreases latency and improves signal integrity. In summary, the main advantage of CAMM2 lies in its smaller size combined with potential capacity, which can reach up to 128GB.
Since the CUDIMM memory standard is not yet available to consumers, it is difficult to predict whether it or CAMM2 will gain more traction. However, it should not be forgotten that CAMM is not just for desktops, but also extends to laptops through the LPCAMM standard.
