The creator of MSI Afterburner, Alexy Nicolaychuk, known as “Unwinder” on the software development forum The Guru of 3D, confirmed that the software will have a new update close to the launch of the Nvidia RTX 5080 and that will bring independent monitoring for up to three fans on GPUs.
The latest stable version was released in April 2023 and Alexy also suggested that MSI’s upcoming offerings for the RTX 5080 could swap individual controllers per fan for more granular control.

It indicates that the RTX 5080 GPUs (probably from MSI) will provide three independent fan controllers, an improvement over previous generations. With the hardware part resolved, the software implementation arrives with an MSI Afterburner update close to the launch of the RTX 5080.
Therefore, the RTX 5080 will be the first Blackwell GPU to hit shelvescorroborating previous rumors of a January 21st release date. However, it should be noted that not all RTX 5080 GPUs can have this feature.
Speed Control
Controlling the speed of each fan individually requires more than a software update, requiring underlying changes to the GPU PCB. Even on high-quality triple-fan GPUs, many AIBs choose to connect all of the fans to a single header or two.
In many cases, even when it is possible to independently adjust the speed of the first two fans, the third fan is fixed in relation to them.
Alexey stated that there will be a new button on Afterburner for asynchronous speed control for the third fan. With independent control of all fans, the user can define personalized speeds and curves for each one individually.
RTX 5080
Rumors indicate that the Nvidia RTX 5080 should adopt the GB203-400-A1 die, equipped with 10,752 cores or 84 SMs, 16GB of 30 Gbps GDDR7 memory and a 256-bit memory bus.
Furthermore, the leak of the MSI RTX 5080 case, confirmed that the card will come with 16GB GDDR7 and 256-bit memory.
With 10% more CUDA cores than its predecessor, a moderate performance increase can be expected, but most of this depends on how good Blackwell will be on an architectural level. In the early evening (Brasília time), more information should be announced during NVIDIA’s presentation at CES 2025.
