Mobile GPUs transformed into desktop graphics cards is not something new. Now it’s time for NVIDIA’s top-of-the-line chips to undergo the change and be sold in the Chinese market. One channel got the GeForce RTX 4090M and RTX 4080M, showing their performance, which is well below the desktop versions.
This is something we expect, as mobile GPU configurations are always lower compared to the same SKU aimed at desktop PCs. But the Russian channel also addresses the risks of using these cards, which are not recognized by NVIDIA nor even manufactured by partner companies.
It is true that it is possible to find them cheaper than their original desktop versions and they use less energy, but it is also true that the chances of finding a damaged GPU or inappropriate assembly, in addition to having low performance, are also high.
Performance of refurbished GeForce RTX 40 mobile GPUs
Regarding the performance of these video cards, the RTX 4090M has slightly better performance than the RTX 4080M. The second is even inferior to the desktop RTX 4070 Ti, a GPU that delivers performance very close to the RTX 4090M.
Something interesting to note in the tests is that these refurbished mobile GPUs have considerably lower consumption. Comparing the two versions of the GeForce RTX 4090, the desktop PC chip consumes more than triple the mobile GPU. The consumption of the RTX 4080M is also 100w. The RTX 4070 Ti, for example, easily exceeds 200w.
Because of this, these notebook GPUs do not require large designs like the high-end NVIDIA Ada Lovelace GPUs. For comparison purposes, a Radeon RX 6600 also has maximum peaks of 100/105w, a GPU that can have simpler designs and a cooling system because of this.
According to the Russian channel, these mobile GPUs were removed from defective notebooks and then reconditioned into video cards. The person responsible for the tests even found cracks in the GPUs, something that could have happened during assembly and could potentially make them unusable.
But the most curious thing is that these GPUs are identified as qualifying examples, a type of chip that clearly will not end up inside a notebook that will be sold on the market. How these RTX 4090M and RTX 4080M became desktop graphics cards is something we probably won’t know.
