Announced in September 1999, the GeForce 256first board in the line GeForcearrived on the market exactly on October 11th of that year. In addition to being the first option in the GeForce line, this card was also notable for popularizing the concept of GPU, in which the central chip of the video card performs functions that previously depended on the processor.

As the company explains in a official post on their website celebrating the 25th anniversary of the plaque’s launch, “The GeForce 256 wasn’t just another graphics card – it was introduced as the world’s first GPU, setting the stage for future advances in gaming and computing. With hardware and lighting (T&L) transformation, it took the load off the CPU, a fundamental advancement.”

NVIDIA also highlights the GeForce 256, alongside titles that revolutionized gaming such as: Unreal Tournament e Quake III Arena, opened the doors to the significant advances in AI research, creator workflows, and all the developments and advancements that NVIDIA has demonstrated over the last 25 years.
