SK Hynix has confirmed that mass production of GDDR7 memory for graphics cards will begin much earlier than expected and the process is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024.
Previously, a company representative had revealed that this would only occur in early 2025, followed by an announcement from the manufacturer itself that it would actually occur in the last quarter of this year. However, they managed to speed up the process and help the engineering team anticipate the start of mass production.
SK Hynix’s announcement is extremely direct, putting all its operations at full steam to achieve the results announced by Micron and Samsung with GDDR7 memories for video cards.
The development of GDDR7 memory in March was prompted by global customer interest in the AI DRAM market, which caters to both specialized graphics processing and high-speed performance. The company says it will begin mass production in the third quarter.

The gains of GDDR7 memories
Additionally, SK Hynix has also confirmed that its GDDR7 memories will hit the market with 32 Gbps – which is 60% faster than what is seen in current GDDR6. According to the manufacturer’s own information, this could result in next-generation GPUs featuring memory bandwidth of 1.5 TB/s (via the 384-bit bus).
Chips with 40 Gbps are expected, but there is no date set for mass production to begin yet. Still, rumors suggest that NVIDIA will limit its GeForce RTX 50 GPUs to operating at 28 Gbps in its first generation of hardware and, as far as it has been officially announced, it is the only one that has confirmed the use of this memory.
Another important factor is that, in addition to adopting new packaging technologies, SK Hynix’s GDDR7 memories will have a power efficiency of up to 50% compared to GDDR6. Instead of four layers of heat dissipation substrate, the new chips will use six and reduce thermal resistance by up to 74%.
Race to supply NVIDIA
With rumors that NVIDIA will launch its GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs after CES 2025, the race is on to produce the GDDR7 memory that will be used in the graphics cards. While SK Hynix is getting ahead of the curve, Micron and Samsung have yet to release their predictions.
