Summary
- The Galaxy Z Flip 8 can be reduced in thickness and weight by 10%, reaching 6 mm open and 12 mm closed, weighing 170 g.
- Samsung plans to increase sales of foldables by 10% in 2026, with a target of 6.7 million units.
- The success of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, with its thinner and lighter design, drives the thickness reduction strategy for new models.
Samsung could reduce the thickness and weight of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 by at least 10%. According to sources heard by the South Korean website The Bellthe company wants consumers to notice that the device is thinner and lighter, which could lead to an even bolder cut.
According to the publication, the change is part of Samsung’s strategy to increase sales of foldable devices, with targets 10% higher than in 2025, totaling 6.7 million units.
A 10% reduction would leave the Z Flip 8 with a thickness of approximately 6mm when opened and 12mm when closed, in addition to 170g in weight.
Slim Galaxy Z Fold 7 was a success
The good acceptance of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 format indicates that this is an interesting path to selling more. Its launch contrasted with the presentation of a Z Flip 7 very similar to its predecessor.
The Z Fold 7 is 25% thinner than the Z Fold 6, just 8.9 mm when folded and 4.2 mm when opened. Furthermore, it was 10% lighter, weighing 215 g.
Meanwhile, the Z Flip 7 has a wider external screen (and similar to Motorola’s Razr line), one of the few noticeable visual changes. The thickness even decreased, with 6% less when opened and 8% less when closed, but it was not enough to cause the same impact as the Fold model.
Smaller thickness makes sense for foldables
Making a device lighter and thinner is no guarantee of success when it comes to traditional smartphones — the weak sales of the iPhone Air and Galaxy S25 Edge show this.
With foldables, however, the situation is different: a smaller thickness reduces the feeling of holding two stacked cell phones. Wearing the device closed is more comfortable, as is carrying it in your pants pocket or bag.
In addition to Samsung, other brands have realized this need, such as Honor and Oppo.
