FSR is now the official name of AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution

Many people don’t even remember, but FSR is an abbreviation for FidelityFX Super Resolution, which until recent days was the official name for AMD’s super resolution technology. Recognizing the much greater popularity of the acronym, the company decided to give up the compound name, and has now announced that FSR becomes the only correct way to refer to the resource.

For users, the decision won’t make much difference. The naming of the different versions of FSR remains the same, so most apps and games should not see any changes. We will no longer see technology written as FidelityFX in game settings, which may help to confuse some unsuspecting players less.

Those who should feel the most changes are the developers, who no longer need to include the full name of the technology in their games. Whether in promotional documents, menus and other types of registration, this should facilitate the process and help with disambiguation when referring to technology.

AMD seeks to strengthen FSR as a brand

The biggest impact of the decision will be on AMD itself, which visibly seeks to strengthen the brand around the FSR name. By abandoning FidelityFX Super Resolution, the company focuses on promoting a single name, and can also promote more gaming technologies beyond super resolution itself.

It’s no surprise that the decision comes just a few weeks before the official launch of FSR Redstone, which will introduce several technologies for dedicated video cards based on RDNA 4.
