Intel’s new processor manufacturing process is not achieving performance in the production of components that the company would like, according to the company’s sources reported to Reuters. The numbers would be so low that the first Panther Lake processors, which will mark the technology debut, can end up being sold with very low profit margins or even damage.

It is normal for new manufacturing processes to start with lower income even in their mass production phase, and then improvements are being made until it reaches better production and profitability margins for the company. In the case of 18a lithography, Intel would be aiming at a yield of at least 50% to start producing more processors with technology.

However, Reuters sources report that it would be necessary “a huge increase in income” so that the Panther Lake will arrive in the fourth quarter of 2025. Without this increase in production, the company is likely to sell products with minimal profit, or even out of loss.

Intel’s official positioning remains that the company does not face problems with the 18th process. On July 30, the company’s CFO, David Zinsner, stated that “our performance trajectory and performance gives us confidence that this will be a successful release that will further strengthen Intel’s position in the notebook market.”

Process 18A of Panther Lake Processors can be “or go or crack” for Intel

The Reuters report also mentions that one of its sources called Intel’s process 18a of a Hail Mary to the company, which can be translated more or less like the expression “either go or crack.”

The company has invested a lot, still under Pat Gelsinger tutelage, in what could be a technology to compete with TSMC, winning external clients for the manufacture of chips.

However, while Intel supports 18th and roadmap advances with no changes to Panther Lake processors that mark their debut, customer tests do not reflect the same optimism.

Unfortunately many rumors and information not official circulate technology. While we were rumored that the process failed on Broadcom tests last year, we also have rumors that several companies would be interested in technology.

Intel could help cool so many rumors and rumors by offering official numbers or estimates of the current performance of its new lithography, but so far the company keeps this information confidential.
