Summary
- Firefox will have an AI assistant that will be optional and run in a separate browser window.
- Mozilla promises that AI Window will be developed openly, with community participation, maintaining user control.
- Firefox already has AI tools, such as page summarization on the iPhone and assistants in the desktop sidebar.
Firefox will have a new browsing mode, with an integrated artificial intelligence assistant, called AI Window. As the name suggests, it will run in a separate browser window, being completely optional.
The developer did not show the feature in practice. It describes AI Window as a “new, intelligent, user-controlled space” that will allow you to “talk to an AI assistant and get help while you browse.”
“While other companies are building AI experiences that keep you locked in a conversation, we envision a different path, where AI serves as a trusted companion,” says Mozilla’s announcement this Thursday (11/13).
Mozilla promises that AI Window will be built openly, in discussion with the user community — Firefox, it is worth remembering, is an open source project. “In Firefox, you will never be tied to an ecosystem or have mandatory AI. You decide when, how or if you will use it”, says the developer.
The AI Window does not yet have a release date — for now, all the organization has made available is a form for interested parties to register and receive news, including the chance to test the tool when it is at a more advanced stage.
Mozilla tries to find middle ground for AI
Over the past few months, Firefox has received some tools based on artificial intelligence.
The iPhone version, for example, summarizes the content of the page opened when shaking the cell phone (but only in English, for now). Meanwhile, on the desktop, it is possible to access some assistants using the sidebar (such as Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini), but without them seeing what is in the browser.
The organization seems to want to position itself in a balanced way in relation to AI, between browsers that want to do everything with agents (Atlas, Opera Neon, Dia, Comet) and those that want distance from robots (Vivaldi).

“Our focus is on making the best browser, which includes recognizing that everyone has their own needs. For some, AI is part of everyday life. For others, it’s only occasionally useful. And many are just curious about what it can offer, but don’t know where to start,” writes Mozilla. “Whatever you choose, with Firefox, you’re in control.”
Despite the cautionary speech, the organization does not reject AI completely. “We believe that standing still while technology progresses is not beneficial for the web or for humanity. That’s why we take on the responsibility of shaping how AI integrates with the web,” he ponders.
