The reality of older models
The arrival of iOS 18 brings another step in the evolution of Apple’s operating systems, revealing new features and improvements for compatible devices. For many users of the company, this moment is also a time to consider whether it is worth investing in a new, more recent iPhone model to avoid falling behind on these new features or whether it is still possible to keep your model for a while longer.
In a country like Brazil, where the iPhone is very expensive, this decision could be important. And in this case, the news is good!
It turns out that with each new version of iOS, Apple traditionally adjusts the list of compatible devices, leaving out some older models. Last year, for example, owners of iPhones 8, 8 Plus and X were unable to update to iOS 17, losing access to new features and security improvements.
But for iOS 18, expectations are a little more positive. According to Apple, if your iPhone was compatible with iOS 17, it should also be compatible with iOS 18. This means that no models will be excluded this year. In other words, it will be possible to enjoy the new features of the new system from the second-generation iPhone SE to the models in the iPhone 15 line.
Which models will be compatible with iOS 18?
Here is the list of iPhones that should be compatible with iOS 18, according to Apple:
- iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
- iPhone XR
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 mini
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15
- iPhone 15 Plus
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
Of course, models that had already been excluded before are no longer on the list, so if you have an iPhone manufactured in 2017 or earlier, such as the iPhone 8 or iPhone X, you will not be able to update to iOS 18.
It’s also worth remembering that this doesn’t mean your device will stop working, just that it won’t have access to the latest features and security improvements offered by the new version of the operating system.
What about Apple Intelligence?
Many people are also unsure about one of the most anticipated features of iOS 18, which is the arrival of Apple Intelligence. This new feature promises to bring even deeper and more advanced interaction with Apple’s smartphone.
Unfortunately, however, it is still in its early stages, so only a few models will be compatible with it. So far, only the latest models, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, are eligible to test the Apple Intelligence beta.
There are high expectations that the iPhone 16 line will be fully compatible with this new feature, but we will have to wait for the September 9 event for official confirmation.
