Despite having a relatively good approval rating on Steam, Final Fantasy XVI is a game that still needs optimization. Tom’s Hardware tests show how heavy the game is, which You need a GeForce RTX 4070 to achieve averages of 60 FPS, but that’s at 1080p and medium preset, without upscaling.
The site used the preset that balances graphics with performance, equivalent to medium, and that also activates upscaling, a technology that was disabled for these tests. Therefore, all video cards used ran the game natively.
The current generation’s entry-level GPUs, the GeForce RTX 4060 and Radeon RX 7600 XT, don’t even reach 50 FPS at this setting, delivering minimums below 30 FPS. The RX 6600, then, has averages in the 30 FPS range. The powerful RTX 4090 seems to struggle to deliver just over 100 FPS at such a low resolution for it.
If we consider the ultra graphics preset, still in FullHD, Final Fantasy XVI becomes very demanding. Among the 9 GPUs tested by Tom’s Hardware, the first to exceed 60 FPS (easily) is the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER, with the RX 7900 GRE close to 60 FPS.
Raising the resolution to 1440p, without the help of upscaling or frame generator, only the RTX 4090 manages to surpass 60 FPS. The RTX 4070, a GPU that can handle heavy games at this resolution, doesn’t even reach an average of 40 FPS. The RX 7900 XTX and RTX 4080 SUPER come close to an average of 60 FPS.
RTX 4070 can’t handle Final Fantasy XVI in 4K
With this data in mind, it’s no surprise to say that the RTX 4090 can’t handle Final Fantasy XVI without upscaling and frame gen at 4K and ultra. What can we say, then, about the others…
Tom’s Hardware also showed how the strongest video cards handle Square Enix’s RPG in 4K, but with the necessary help. The GeForce RTX 4070 still can’t deliver 60 FPS. This is only possible with the RX 7900 GRE and RTX 4080 SUPER, which deliver more than 70 FPS.
The game has a 76% approval rating from over 3,800 player reviews on Steam. However, even those who give the game positive reviews point to this lack of optimization as one of its main problems. There are those who don’t like the game itself, as it changes the franchise in general quite a bit.
