Elon Musk’s supercomputer Colossus is causing a number of problems for the city of Memphis in the US. The smoke emitted directly from the site where it is located has already caused concern among residents and authorities about the impacts it is causing to the environment.
Colossus is focused on artificial intelligence, generating material for its xAI (Grok’s text and image generator) and is equipped with 100,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs. According to the entrepreneur, it took just 122 days to build the entire structure and he stated at the beginning of his activities that he wants to double its size in the coming months.
However, Elon Musk’s supercomputer is powered by 18 methane gas generators – something he has not obtained legal permission to use. They are also causing widespread smoke to fill the air around Memphis.
Considering that the city is already known for having a high rate of cancer diagnoses and also a much lower life expectancy than other places in the US, this issue is worrying the population and authorities even more.
They already have a serious problem with air pollution. The source of this comes from southwest Memphis.

Artificial intelligence may be a groundbreaking technology. But it is imposing the same kind of pollution problems on communities that industrial corporations have been bringing for the past 100 years.
