Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Taiwan should pay them to defend its factories and territory from the Chinese threat.

Speaking to Bloomberg Business Week, the politician points out that the country is self-sufficient and that they shouldn’t be worried about issues like this – since the entire chip industry has been “taken over” by them.

I think Taiwan should pay us to defend them. You know, it’s no different than a security company. Taiwan gives us absolutely nothing. The country is immensely healthy for taking all of our chip business, and we should never have let that happen.

It is important to note that Donald Trump’s statement regarding Taiwan differs from what all other presidents have maintained – including the Joe Biden administration, which has voted to protect the country if China were to attack its territory.

The United States currently has an agreement to defend the country, including providing weapons and ammunition in the event of a military confrontation as a backup. If the candidate wins the presidential race, it is uncertain whether he will maintain the protective measures and this could have major implications for China’s move to retake Taiwan.

The impact of Donald Trump’s statement

On Wednesday (17), TSMC shares fell by 2.4%. The semiconductor manufacturer is one of the largest on the planet, producing chips for all major technology corporations – such as NVIDIA, Intel, AMD and Apple.

In 2022, TSMC’s president – Mark Liu – already told CNN that even if China invades Taiwan and tries to take control of the factories, this will not yield results.

No one can take over TSMC by force. If there is a military action or invasion, they will render TSMC factories inoperable.

Donald Trump’s statement on Taiwan raises a question mark over how these supportive policies will continue if he is elected. If TSMC’s factories in the country are seized, it could cause major problems – both geopolitical and economic, given the country’s global trading partners.
