Nvidia’s GPUS shipping restrictions to China have been strengthening in recent times, but that has not prevented the parallel market from thriving in the latest months. According to a report by Financial Times, a total of $ 1 billion in the company’s accelerators for AI has already been sent to the Asia country in the period.

The site shows several evidence of a large amount of signs sent to China, including pre-assembled racks. Restricted models such as H100, H200 and Top of line B200 would be much sought after, increasing the profit of those who can circumvent US restrictions to take the products.

These are chips that have not lost demand even with the official availability of the H20, because they are much more powerful. However, even this GPU made especially to be sold to China even suffered sanctions, which must have boosted the parallel market even more. Recently Nvidia has announced that it will again sell a new version of the H20 to the country soon, but this should not much reduce the search for more powerful accelerators.

Nvidia declares himself about restricted GPUS reaching China

Nvidia was asked about the matter by the Financial Times and stated that “there is no evidence of any AI chips loss,” claiming that she would not have left her unlawful shipments.

In addition, the company adds that it would not make sense of a “technical and economic” point of view to buy signs through the parallel market. This is because “data centers need service and support, which we offer only for authorized NVIDIA products.”

However, the volume of signs sold to China by circumventing the sanctions that Financial Times reports, seems to deny this company statement.

Southeast Asian countries should undergo more control

The report suggests that Southeast Asia countries such as Malaysia and Thailand may be used to circumvent US export control. It is the same situation that Singapore went through at the beginning of the year.

This update can be the last incentive that the US needs to tighten its restrictions on sending AI accelerators to these countries, as this idea has been considered for some time.

“History has many times showed before, given a huge profit, middlemen will always find a way,” I would have declared a Chinese distributor to the Financial Times.
