Frederik X, the King of Denmark, took the stage in Copenhagen accompanied by Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, to “turn on” the Gefion, the country’s first supercomputer. The symbolic gesture marks the debut of the Danish machine that will use 1,528 NVIDIA H100 GPUs to power its AI computing.
“Denmark recognizes that to innovate in AI, the most impactful technology of our time, it needs to foster a domestic AI infrastructure and ecosystem,” said Huang. “The Gefion supercomputer will supercharge Denmark’s scientists with local infrastructure for AI computing to drive advances in life sciences, climate research and quantum computing.”
It’s no surprise that NVIDA’s CEO considers AI to be the most important technology today. It is his leadership in the area that made the company reach the top of the most valuable in the world for a brief moment. In fact, at the time we write this post, it is in second position, running very closely behind Apple.
According to Tom’s Hardware, Denmark has invested heavily in technology, especially in the area of AI. Gefion, however, is a project established jointly with the private sector.
Gefion cost more than US$100 million
For those wondering how much it costs to build a supercomputer with 1,528 H100 boards, the answer is more than US$100 million. Gefion was established by the Danish Center for AI Innovation (DCAI), which brings together the government and a large company in the country.
More about supercomputers:
Thus, Gefion was financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, which invested US$87 million in the project. The Danish Export and Investment Fund (EIFO), a government division, contributed another US$14.5 million. Thus, the Danish government has a 15% share of the DCAI.
“I am incredibly proud of the team that came together and collaborated to make this vision a reality, delivering a leading capability that is now ready for customers to begin testing in new use cases,” said Nadia Carlsten, CEO of DCAI. “Gefion is the game changer that many innovators have been waiting for.”
