DDR3 memories may return amid component crisis

Given the great demand for data center components that power artificial intelligence initiatives, consumers will have to resort to old hardware to assemble their machines. And, according to Board Channels, the situation could be an opportunity for old DDR3 memories to gain space again.

An analysis conducted by the company shows that, in the Chinese market, the search for this type of component has almost tripled in recent times. Old memories are sought both individually and as part of packages that include Intel CPUs between their 6th and 9th generations.

While DDR5 memories are rapidly increasing in price, DDR4 is also proving to be less viable — a result of the fact that many modern CPUs have already started to abandon them. Thus, those who want to build more discreet machines have found DDR3 as a a solution that still has a good cost-benefit ratio.

DDR3 memories are still easily accessible

Board Channels also points to the fact that although many companies no longer manufacture DDR3 memory, the component is still easily accessible. Used drives in good condition can still be found in used PCswhich has helped to keep hardware prices stable.

In China, the fact that X99 HEDT motherboards are quite popular, thanks to their low cost and compatibility with Xeon CPUs, also contributed. As they work with old RAM memory technology, this is yet another stimulus for the demand for it to continue to increase.

While the trend is currently seen mainly in China, the popularity of DDR3 memories may return to growth in other parts of the world. All this thanks to a components market that must be quite challenging for consumers in 2026.

Among the solutions that are being found by many are “workarounds” that transform notebook memories into DDR5 modules. Although this may involve some risks, these modifications have the advantage of saving a few thousand reais.
