The shortage of memory chips caused by exacerbated demand for components for professional AI processing could prove worse than already pessimistic predictions for the coming times. A new Wall Street Journal article cites market analysts and estimates that 70% of all memory produced in the world throughout 2026 will be used in data centers.
As expected, the lack of components and the rise in their prices affect different segments of electronic products, and the WSJ highlights its impact on the automobile industry. The website’s article compares the situation even with the times of the coronavirus pandemic, saying that we should see a major delay in automakers.

The most alarming part of the article comes in the comment from MS Hwang, an analyst at Counterpoint Research. According to the electronics market specialist, the situation is emergency for companies that need memory components, and production capacity for 2028 is already being sold.
The comment not only aligns with previous predictions that we would not see an improvement in the crisis until late 2027 or early 2028 – in fact we now have the prospect of moving into 2028 while still facing component shortages.

Memory modules become an increasingly larger share of product prices
The current situation makes memory components an increasingly larger share of the total cost of an electronic product. Hwang projects that most devices that need the modules will have 10% of their prices just to cover costs, while this share in cell phones could reach up to 30%.

Market projections already predict a shrinkage in the PC and cell phone segment, which should reach more areas as well. With the prospect of normalization becoming more and more distant, it is difficult to guess what level the problems will reach. “It really is the craziest time we’ve ever had,” said TrendForce analyst Avril Wu.
