CXMT, China’s largest memory component manufacturer, is already preparing to end its production of DDR4 modules for both servers and home use. According to information from Digitimes, the company should stop offering the products on the middle of next year.
The information comes as a surprise because the early withdrawal of DDR4 by memory market giants was very attributed to the growth of CXMT. Samsung, Micron and Sk Hynix will now end the manufacture of the modules this year, for the difficulty of competing with the volume of offers and aggressive prices of the Chinese company.
At the same time, the maturation of the DDR4 process by CXMT is somewhat recent, with the company starting its mass production only in late 2024. This will mark a very short generation cycle for the manufacture of these components by CXMT.
The company of China, however, should not completely end the manufacturing of DDR4 modules. The company will continue to provide services to gigadevice in some of its facilities, which can extend the longevity of the standard a little, even though the supply of products decreases. This should cause more price increases, which are already happening today.
CXMT changes DDR4 focus to DDR5 in order to meet government demands
Also according to information from Digitimes, the accelerated transition from CXMT of DDR4 memories to the DDR5 generation comes due to pressure from the government. China currently fights for more autonomy in advanced technologies, while disputing space in the growing AI market.

Modern AI technologies are quite demanding of memory performance, and China wants to invest in HBM and DDR5 so as not to be left behind. Thus, CXMT apparently will not have much time to enjoy the space it has conquered in DDR4.
However, according to Tom’s hardware, the Chinese company’s DDR5 chips would still be facing problems in more extremely temperature tests, which can make them less attractive to industrial use. Now is to see if abandoning the focus on DDR4 will help accelerate improvements in new technologies.
