Eric Demers, who designed ATI’s best GPUs and led almost all of Qualcomm’s Adreno architecture projects, is now part of Intel’s “AI-focused” GPU team. This is an event that could have more far-reaching effects than most commercial negotiations and billion-dollar financial transactions.

Intel’s efforts in GPUs will certainly be significantly bolstered by Demers. And his hiring is particularly welcome news in these troubled times for the company. Even if one considers that Intel is in a better situation than a year ago, it cannot be said that the blue team is already back in form.

This change is very significant, Demers, in addition to being an executive, is also a GPU architect. And there aren’t many professionals at that level. That isa, which can build a GPU architecture from scratch.

Intel has remained silent on the exact description of Demers’ new role. However, the information indicates, as expected, that he will be responsible for designing GPU accelerators for Artificial Intelligence.

And that’s bad news for gamers who would like to see Intel’s Arc series receive a processing power boost.

Currently, accelerators from NVIDIA and AMD are the top choices for data center-grade AI chips. And Intel wants to enter this market, having produced three generations of Gaudi accelerators.

The last of them, Gaudi 3, is from 2024 and was presented as a more affordable alternative to NVIDIA’s already old H100. And it will be replaced in the coming years by Jaguar Shores. And Shores will coexist with Crescent Island, a custom design for inference tasks.

Weighty resume

As a chip architect, Demers knows GPUs from the first transistor to the video outputs, having spent the last 14 years designing them for AMD (formerly ATI) and Qualcomm. Its designs are present in millions of smartphones today, as part of Snapdragon chips.

For those who remember the names, he worked at Silicon Graphics and even Matrox during his early career.

The R300 series is fondly remembered by any technology enthusiast from the early 2000s in the form of the Radeon 9700 and 9500 graphics cards, which dealt a double whammy to NVIDIA’s offerings at the time. The blow was mainly on the much criticized FX 5800 and still known today as “Dustbuster” (something like “Vacuum Cleaner”).

When AMD absorbed ATI, Demers became the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the company’s graphics division, a position he held until 2012, when he joined Qualcomm.
