With several reports of failures in the 13th and 14th generation Intel Raptor Lake processors, the North American store Puget Systems presents a survey showing that there are other series of CPUs that have presented more failures than the current ones. The Ryzen 5000 and 11th generation Intel Core, for example, are some of these series.

The company said it has seen the problem happen on both its own computers and on its customers’ machines. It doesn’t deny Intel’s current situation, but its survey shows that this isn’t the tech giant’s worst moment.

The survey with data on processor failures per month (graph below) shows that a level of failure similar to Raptor Lake occurred in mid-August 2021, at the time of the 11th generation Intel Core, both by consumers (“field”), but even more by Puget Systems (“shop”).

Although between May and June, problems with 13th and 14th generation Intel Core processors occurred more among the store’s customers, in July, this problem was considerably greater on the company’s PCs.

AMD Ryzen CPUs also had a large number of failures

Looking at the generational graph, we can see that the failure rate with AMD Ryzen 5000 (Zen 3) processors was higher than the failure rate with Intel Raptor Lake CPUs. With Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4), the failure rate is almost double compared to 14th Gen Intel Core.

But the worst series, the one that presented the most instability from the point of view of the North American store and its customers, was the 11th generation of Intel CPUs.

In this last graph below, which shows the failure rate of Intel Core processors from the 10th to the 14th generation, it shows that, yes, there were a large number of cases of instability with Raptor Lake Refresh processors (14th generation).

According to Puget Systems, it managed to reduce the occurrence of failures in July (as seen in the first graph), through customized configurations created by them to prevent processors from reaching high levels of consumption, which consequently leads to failures.

The US store also claims that the problems observed in Intel Raptor Lake processors appeared after an average usage time of 6 months of these products. The company guarantees that its next computers sold with these SKUs will already be shipped with the microcode patch (promised for the next few days by Intel) applied.
