The next generation of CPUS Ryzen based on the AMD Zen 6, by Codename Medusa, should have some changes in the Integrated Memory Controller (IMC). The information is from Uniko’s Hardware, which published on his X profile, former Twitter, and, so far, have not been officially confirmed.

According to the information, AMD Ryzen CPUS with Zen 6 core architecture will have two BMIs. It was not clear if they would be two IMCs within silicon or two separate BMIs, but it seems that it will lead to changes in DDR5 memory orientation requirements.

Rumors suggest that one of the BMIs supports only 1 dimm per channel (or 1dpc) and therefore it would be possible to use two DIMms in the configuration.

Currently, AMD motherboards of AMD use the first DIMM slots, labeled as A0 and B0, so that the initial startup configuration occurs smoothly. With the new BMI, The orientation of the dimm slots will be changed to A1 and B1 and therefore Zen 6 would not be compatible with the old 1DPC orientation.

In several motherboards AM5, the A2 and B2 slots are labeled as “first”, but these are designs with four DIMms. This compatibility can be specific only for Zen 6 CPUs on plates with 2 Dimms, such as mini-itx and matx designs. Only a few specific ATX motherboards for overclochkers have two dimms designs.

AMD would also be working to support memory guidelines A0/B0 as soon as these chips are released, but performance is considered inferior compared to A1/B1 settings.

Expectation for the launch

The Zen 6 -based desktop line is scheduled to be released next year. And it should bring several updates in terms of nuclei counting and cache increase, as well as architectural updates.

It also means that companies are preparing to launch technology compatible products. After all, AMD would not launch new CPUs without having motherboards available on the market for users to use them.

MSI’s MSI MPower AM5 motherboard allegedly fully meets the new configuration. However, users need to wait for the Zen 6-based Ryzen “Medusa” Ryzen announcement to see how the new chips work and what type of compatibility is offered on existing mother motherboards.
