Optimizing games on Unreal Engine 5 has proven to be a challenge since its launch, so it’s no surprise that Epic Games has dedicated itself to improving the graphics engine’s performance with each new version. And it seems that the most recent update has shown considerable improvements to the engine.
The MxBenchmarkPC channel put together a comparison of Unreal Engine 5.7 in relation to version 5.4 of the graphics engine, using the photorealistic tech demo Venice, from Scans Factory, to show the differences.
The tests were conducted on a system with a Core i7-14700F as a processor and an RTX 5080 as a graphics card. On the GPU side, the channel states that it saw performance improvements in Unreal Engine 5.7 reaching up to 25%, depending on the scene, compared to version 5.4.
MxBenchmarkPC also points out that GPU power usage has increased, but this is not necessarily a disadvantage. In fact, it may indicate that the engine is making better use of the graphics card’s resources, and therefore draws more energy.
Moving on to the processor, the performance improvements of Unreal Engine 5.7 in the tech demo can reach around 35%. In this part we have more stable frame rates in all scenes, reducing choking in general.
Unreal Engine 5.7 also brings improvements to Lumen
The channel also highlights improvements to the lighting effects of the Lumen feature, which made its debut in Unreal Engine 5.
“In terms of image quality, UE 5.7 offers more stable and accurate Lumen lighting, and especially better quality Lumen reflections (with more performance at the same time).”

WCCFTech, however, highlights that there has been no major advancement in Lumen’s native noise reduction in Unreal Engine 5.7, and solutions like NVIDIA’s Ray Reconstruction remain a better option in this area.
As we are talking about a new version of a graphics engine, it will still be a while before we see these improvements being reflected in games that use the engine.
