A comparison between very similar notebooks equipped with a RTX 5090 and an RTX 4090 is drawing attention on the internet for not showing a big performance difference between the two models. Tests were done in more than 20 games and, on average, the performance is basically the same between the two versions – but the price difference is quite large.
The video comes from the Jarrod Farncomb channel on YouTube. He uses an XMG Neo 16 for his comparison, the 2024 version with RTX 4090 and the 2025, with RTX 5090. Unfortunately, the scenario is not ideal for comparison, since the difference between the Specs is not just in the GPUS.
Last year’s model comes with an Intel Core I9-14900hx as a CPU, with 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory. Already the current version follows its RTX 5090 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275hx, with 32GB of memory DDR5-6400.
Deepening GPU behavior in different tests, the processor may be influencing the not very exciting results of NVIDIA’s new high-end video card for notebooks.
RTX 5090 seems to bring more gains to autonomy
Farncomb’s detailed tests show that XMG Neo 16 with the RTX 5090 focuses on saving power instead of delivering more performance. In most scenarios, especially when the RTX 4090 does better, the 5090 version could use more of the plate potential, but simply does not. It is possible to observe this well in the Red Dead Redemption 2 tests.

This may have to do not only with plate design, but also with the processor, since Intel’s Arrow Lake-HX generation famously sacrificed performance in exchange for energy efficiency.
The result is that while the XMG Neo 16 with RTX 5090 disappoints in performance gains, it shows much more autonomy than its previous version. Thus, the upgrade in this case is recommended for those who like to play more time away from the outlet, and are willing to pay the big price difference to it.
