Wes Winder, founder of a software company in Canada, generated a lot of buzz after excitedly announcing that he had fired all of his development employees and replaced them with three specific AIs. According to Winder, new artificial intelligence tools would be able to write code faster and with fewer errors than their old collaborators.

In a provocative post on his X account, Winder said: “I fired my entire development team. I replaced them with o1, Lovable and Cursor. Now I ship 100x faster with 10x cleaner code. o3 open AI is coming and 90% of development work will not survive”. His message sparked debate and, of course, an immediate reaction from the technology community.

However, what followed this announcement was not so predictable. A few days after publication, in a much more discreet way, Winder made a job offer on the Linkedin platformlooking for software developers with React/Remix/Supabase experience for additional work. In the post, he asked interested parties to send their portfolios or recent work. The ad quickly went viral, generating even more controversy.

In response to comments criticizing his decision, Winder commented: “I think there was a lack of context on social media. I definitely learned a lot of different lessons.” His experience illustrates how the reality of AI’s impact on the job market can be much more complex than many imagine.

The vision of big technology companies

While enthusiasm for new technologies is common, not even big tech companies have taken such a drastic approach. Examples like Amazon show that AI is seen as a tool to alleviate the repetitive and bureaucratic work of developers, not to replace them. AI at Amazon, for example, makes the code review process and documentation easier, allowing engineers to focus more on developing the product itself.

The future of programming

Big names in technology, such as Mark Garman, CEO of AWS, and Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, also took a stance on the future of programmers. Both agree that artificial intelligence will not replace developers, but it will change the role of these professionals.

Instead of writing code manually, engineers of the future will guide AI in creating new products and reviewing the results. As Huang stated in an interview, “Our job is to create computer technology so that no one has to program. Now anyone, around the world, can be a programmer. This is the miracle of artificial intelligence.”
