Two companies in Wuhan, China, announced important advances in different areas of technology and hardware at almost the same time. A startup called Numemory says it has created a new 64GB SCM chip, while JFS Laboratory claims an important milestone in the area of silicon photonics for semiconductors.
The acronym SCM stands for storage-class memory. Numemory’s new chip is called NM101 and incorporates DRAM and NAND elements to offer fast, non-volatile memory for professional use. The description reminds us a little of the work that has been developed for UltraRAM. The Chinese company says its NM101 can record a 10GB high-definition video in just one second.
Meanwhile, JFS Laboratory, also located in Wuhan, announced an important advance in photonics. Anyone who follows hardware news knows that the most advanced solutions in semiconductor manufacturing have long created chips capable of using light emission to transmit data. Companies in China were not yet able to use this type of technology, but now JFS has managed to develop a technique for this.
China’s advances target the domestic market
Anyone who follows the news knows that much of the recent development of new technologies in China is aimed at self-sufficiency. The US and its allies have been trying to block a possible leadership of its socioeconomic rival in several segments, but especially in the area of semiconductors and AI.
This is done through increasingly restrictive sanctions on the Asian market. Therefore, China’s response is the search for independence from external products to continue its advances.
