Compal wins design award with a modular notebook concept, adapt x

Compal is promoting its latest IF Design 2025 award this weekend, which was offered to its new concept for a modular notebook, the adapt X. Different ideas of modular notebooks have been presented in recent times, so Compal sought to stand out with some interesting differentials.

The main attraction that Compal highlights adapt X is that its modules can be used independently. Thus, for example, the detachable keyboard becomes a portable USB keyboard. The screen can be used disconnected as well, and its structure for keyboard fitting becomes a base.

Compal presented its concept to adapt x with two screen sizes: one 16 ”and one 14”. As it is not a finished product, we do not know how the notebook would be sold, but one of the example images of use indicates that it could have a version with both screens, so the user could choose more portability or more viewing area depending on the day, or even use both at the same time.

Adapt x shows connection module

One of the modules imagined by the compal in the concept of adapt x would be a connection dock. A company could offer different doors to the dock, for example, giving users of more USB ports, or specific niche connections that not every notebook has.

The space for an extra accessory of connections raises possibilities that Compal does not mention, but have become popular between notebooks. The most prominent example is EGPUS, appearing in increasingly products. But beyond this idea, we had the first “ENPU”, imagined by Lenovo – another component that would work as well as a module for adapt x.

Compal does not offer ready products. She makes partnerships with OEMs that take advantage of her designs on finished notebooks. Thus, adapt x can never reach the shelves, it will depend on the company’s ability to convince its partners that the concept is not interesting for awards, but also something commercially viable.
