The world of hardware tinkerers always comes up with some interesting and unusual new developments, and this time was no different. The RetroGamingBase channel managed to make an old CRT monitor reach an impressive frequency of 700Hz.
The number is much higher than the 540Hz offered by the ROG Swift Pro PG248QP, for example. It’s even higher than the 600Hz that some panels still in the testing and prototype phase reach. And all this on a Vision MasterPro512 that would be a perfect match for a budget PC.
As everything in life has a trade-off, the disadvantage of the monitor is not only that it is an old product. To achieve such an absurd frequency, the people at the RetroGamingBase channel had to lower the resolution to just 320 x 120p. Interestingly, this is the same resolution as the Game Boy Advance, which offers the same number of pixels in another format: 240 x 160p.
It’s clear that this isn’t an exercise in creating a practical product. However, the project reminds us that not all technological advances come without sacrifices. Although LCD screens have become popular due to their many advantages, their limitations are often not shared by CRT monitors. On older models, if you don’t care about image quality, the refresh rate can be quite impressive.

What would it be like to play on a CRT monitor?
For those who like this kind of amateur setup “just to see how it turns out”, the RetroGamingBase channel has other very interesting videos with their CRT monitor. The highlight of this post was just to push the frequency to the limit, but in others they try to obtain settings that are still “playable”.
In their first successful video, the channel set the monitor to 255Hz because Google reportedly said it was “not possible” to do so. In another post, they reached 300Hz and were still able to play without any problems.
