A report from the South China Morning Post stated that Chinese authorities are recommending that local companies not invest in NVIDIA GPUs for artificial intelligence – with preference to purchasing chips produced in the country itself.
Although the text cites two anonymous sources that are linked to the topic, it is important to highlight that while there is no confirmation from technology corporations or the competent authorities themselves, the information should be treated as “rumor”.
They reveal that the Government of China is recommending that local companies start purchasing chips produced within the country – such as from Huawei Technologies – instead of seeking GPU solutions through NVIDIA or other US tech giants.
It is important to mention that NVIDIA was not banned or prevented from shipping its products to the country, but this could be a response to US sanctions – which led the manufacturer to officially only work with hardware specific to the Chinese market, such as the RTX 4090D GPU. or the Chinese version of the H20 GPU.

Despite being a rumor, this is not the first time that information has emerged about Chinese authorities recommending that local companies opt for chips produced in their own country. In May, The Information showed the same fact – with the Government asking them to reduce the amount of chips purchased from NVIDIA.
Bloomberg has also produced a report showing the same fact, which leads to the assumption that the Chinese want to have complete control over the artificial intelligence chips that are being produced there, leaving foreign companies in the background and reducing their presence from NVIDIA and others in its market.
Even so, China has great difficulty in applying this type of action because its technology has not yet reached the level of what NVIDIA offers. For now, no chip from Huawei or others is at the same level seen by the performance offered by the US corporation.
